Individual Canadian Schools: College Notre Dame

 College Notre Dame
Figure 1.--Here we see a class at the College Notre Dame in 1909. Notice the boys are wearing suits, most with modern looking neckties. A few boys have floppy bows. The teacher at the back is Reverend Father Emilien.

The Colege Notre Dame was an all-boys Catholic College. In French Canada and most countries besides the United States, college means a secondary school, or a combined primary-secondary school, rather than a small university-level school. We are not sure where the College Notre Dame was located, but Quebec (posibly Montreal) is the modst likely location. The school was taught by Catholic priests. We are not sure about the current status of the school, but know it was operating in the early 20th century. We have a few images showing what the school was like in the earky 20th century. They are classroom images showing how the classrooms were set up. The classrooms seem very spartan and the arrangement traditional. The boys, however, are all smartly dressed up in suits. Notice the class here in 1909 (figure 1). The boys all wear suits, apparently knee pants suits. Mist of the boys wear neckties, a few have floppy bows. There is nothing on the wall, except one portrait. Unfortunately we can't make out who it is. Also notice the strict arrangement of the desks in straight rows and the lack of any teaching devices or decorations. It seems rather a boring classroom. We notice another class photograph from the school, but we are not sure about the date. Almost all the boys are wearing floppy bows. I am not sure if this is because the photograph is a little earlier than the 1909 photograph here or the boys are a little younger. A reader writes, "Notice the holes that some of the boys have in their black stockings--a big problem for mothers who always had to keep darning their children's stockings. The "Holeproof" advertisement obviously address the same problem, and some of our German readers talk about how darned stockings were OK for school use but not for Church on Sunday. I think we see some of the boys wearing long underwear underneath the black stockings in this photo." Yes you don't get a good feel for this because many images of boys wearing long stockings are formal portraits and mothers made sure that the children were wearing a good pair of stockings. These school portraits are probably a more realistic depiction.
