English School Uniform: Individual School -- Boston Grammar School, 1970s

Figure 1.--This photograph shows the boys in form 2G at the Boston Grammar School in 1977. Short trousers were no longer worn at the school. Thehair styles, however, are quite different than those prevalent in the 1960s.

The school uniorm from the 1970s lookslittle changed from the 1960s. We have no infomation on the first form, but all the boys in the second form wear long trousers. The most notable differences from the 1960s are the hair styles that the boys wear. They are much longer than the styles commonly worn in the 1960s. None of the boys, however, have shoulder-length hair. Presumably there was a school regulation about hair styles.

A reader writes, "In the 1970s (at least by 1976) the blazer had lost it's braid, and the cap had disappeared. As you noted, long trousers were worn by everyone. Shirts were grey, except for sixth formers who could wear a white shirt. I don't remember any school rules on haircuts, in fact depending on the current fashion I remember people having hair from "number 1" crew cut through to half way down their back. Earrings were frowned upon. During the summer, on particularly hot days, "shirt sleeve order" would be allowed. This mean that blazers and ties could be discarded and shirt sleeves rolled up to the elbow. Only full uniform or full "shirt sleeve order" was allowed; no half-way stages." [Meeds]
