Farnham Grammar School Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

Figure 1.--We see the boys in the Cadet Group wearing their uniforms for the 1956 school portrait. FGS had an Army Cadet group. Boys could participate beginning in Form Three, but participation was compulsory beginning in Form Four.

The School had an active Combined Cadet Force (CCF). FGS wa a relatively small school and as a result there was only an Army Cadet group. Larger schools had other Cadet groups for the other services which is why it is referred to as the Combined Cadet Force. These Cadet groups were quite common at both private and state secondary schools. The program was like Junior ROTC in American schools, but much more common. A substatial part of the school participated. Boys could begin participating in Form Three at about age 13. None of the junior boys were cadets, because of the age limit. Participation was complsory beginning in Form Four. The boys wore a military uniform with a beret. A former student tells us, "Cadets wore khaki serge battledress and army boots to school on Fridays in place of normal school uniform. The battledress blouse bore shoulder titles in scarlet, with cream lettering reading 'Farnham G.S. C.C.F.'. The blouse sleeves also carried badges of rank and attainment (eg for marksmanship). The beret bore the badge of the local West Surrey Regiment." The school portrait here must have been taken on a Friday which was Combined Cadet Force parade day. This is the only school portrait showing the CCF. Presumbablt the other photos were not taken on Friday.
