English School Uniform: Suffield Park School--Photography

Figure 1.--Note the boy who has brought his box camera to the right of the photograph. This shows that photogrphy was becoming increaingly simplified. Also notice the boy on the left. His name is RD Furse. He transferred to Stoke House School.

Photography

This photograph was taken by a professional photographer. The photographer was by Mace & Mase of Cromer. One interesting aspect is that one of the boys in the photograph has a box camera. These were privlidged boys whose parents could afford private school fees. Thus the boy's parents could afford the relatively high cost of photograpy before the introduction of the Kodak Brownie in 1900. An interesting thought, however, is that in the 1890s, photography was becoming simpler. Thus here a boy of probably about 11 years or so is capable of taking photographs. A boy this age handling a camera in the 1880s would have been much less likely. HBC does not think this was all that common even in the 1890s. It does show, however, that there were snap shots being taken in the 1890s.

RD Furse

Note the boy to the left of the photograph here (figure 1). His name is FD Furse. We have noted him in a 1900 photogrph at Stoke House School. This helps us date this photograph at about 1898.

Norfolk Jackets

We are not precisely sure just how Norfolk jackets were contructed. In this photograph they look like just vents. Or perhaps boys stuffed hankies in them. A HBC reader comments, "The Norfolk jackets always had those pleated bands of material at the sides. It looks like there is a concealed breast pocket under the pleating."

Reader Comments

An Englih reader comments, "A very interesting period photograph. If only TV costumiers would study these period photographs. There's a new series, a bit like the 1900 House, but set in an 'Edwardian Cuntry House. Judging from the publicity photos the young upper class boy is not dressed in the proper stuffy Edwardian way, as evidenced in the photo here and numerous others of the period.
