French School Garments: Tunics

Figure 1.--This CDV portrait hows a boy in school clothing as suggested by the book. The dealer suggests the portrait was taken in the 1860s, but to us it looks more like the 1900s. The condusion is probably the CDV. The CDV persisted longer in Europe than America. Both rhe cap and te outdoor pose looks more like the 1900s to us than the 1860s. The tunic itself looks like the tunics popular in the 1900. The studio was R. Caboullet in Saint-Nazaire. A reader writes, "The outfit looks naval. The hat and the sailor collar, all but hidden by his scarf or bow. St. Nazaire is an important French Naval base and port. Germans U-boats were based there during World war II, protected by massive bomb-proof submarine pens.

We notice Fremch boys in the 19th and early 20th century wore tunic of various kinds to school. We do not, however, have a ggod idea as to how prevalent they were abd how popular. We have very little information on these tunics at this time. Our French 19th century archive is very small which sec=verely limits our primary source of ingormation. We hope to expand our understanding as our archive grows. We note boys wearing tynics with belts over them. The belt worn this ay was entirely decoirative, serving no practical purpose. We do note French boys wearing tunics to school in the early-20th century. Tunics were lso common in America at this time, ut wee not as commonly worn to school.
