Chilean Schools: Deutsche Schule / Colegio Alemán

 Deutsche Schule / Colegio Alemán

Figure 1.--We note the Deutsche Schule / Colegio Alemán which was established in Quilpé (1894). In early times the school was known also as "Colegio Campestre" (Country School) because the lessons often took place in open-air. Chile has a German community, but gradually the curriculum became primarily taught in Spanish. The photograph here shows a class of the German School of Quilpué in 1935.

We note the Deutsche Schule / Colegio Alemán which was established in Quilpé (1894). Quilpé is located near San Pablo in southern Chile. This is in the Chilean Lake Distructs where many Germans lived. In early times the school was known also as "Colegio Campestre" (Country School) because the lessons often took place in open-air. We are not sure just how the curriculum was governed by Chilean school regulations. Chile has a German community, but gradually the curriculum became primarily taught in Spanish. The photograph here shows a class of the German School of Quilpué in 1935. The school moved to El Salto and changed its name to the Charlesmagne School (2003). Although it was a bilingual school, the pupils are now basically taught in Spanish.
