Austrian Schoolwear: French Boy in an Austrian School, early 1950s

Figure 1.--.

A French reader tells us that he went to school for a time in Austria during the early 1950s. He tells us that when he was in Austria a few years after World war II, no one showed any bad feeling against him. The Austria people were so affraid of the Soviet occupation forces that the Allied presence was welcomed. He writes, "In the school my classmates knew that I was french, but I was treated just like them. I remember a friend was interrested in the French language. I saw again in 1967 and was very happy, but he had forgoten all his French."

The School

In this period the education of the children was strict in Austria. I was obliged to observe good manners and it was mutual of the persons towards me.

School Clothes

Austrain boys during the 1950s wore short pants throughout the year. I remember that about one-third of the boys wore leather lederhosen. Many had an Austria jacket. Myself I think remenber I also only worn short pants throughout the year, except perhaps when playing in the snow. On a photo I am waering short pants though behind one can see snow. I don't recall feeling cold. In Austria it is a mountain weather, easily warm in the day quickly cold the evening; and the children are used at this climate.

Bernard

When I was in Austria one day my nanny told me that in the village named Linz where we were during some hollyday time, there was a French boy. I went to meet him. He explains to me that he was born in Austria during the War. His French father was a prisoner and worked on a farm. Just after the War he went to France with his parents. He visited Austria for the first time. This boy had the same age as me, he became one of my best friend, His mother gave him a French name. Bernard lives not far from Paris and when we were young, some times we traveled together.
