Scottish Heritage

The school's Scottish heritage is shown by the active Scotish music and dance program. pipe band. Notice the destinctive costumes here. In pipe bands the girls wear the boys' kilt outfits. Also note pipe band wears Balmoral bonnet. The destinctively costumed girls are Highland dancers, not members of the pipe band (figure 1). A reader tells us this is because the pupils are dressed for specific purposes. The boys are dressed for membership of the Pipe Band and Drum Corps, and that is why they are wearing balmoral bonnets. The girls are dressed for performing Scottish Highland Dancing, and under modern rules of the Scottish Highland Dancing Offical Board do not wear headdress. Only male dancers do so nowadays! Incidentally the girls are wearing two forms of dress - The basic dress of the kilt, largely used for dancing the old 'tribal' dances such as Highland Fling, Sword Dance, and Reels; whereas the others are wearing what is known! as the 'Aboyne Dress', used for dancing the more feminine dances such as Flora Macdonalds Lament; The Lilt; or National Dances such as Blue Bonnets or Barracks Johnnie.
