The Echuca Cadet program began at the Echuca 208 Primary School in 1885. The current Echuca unit is 301 Australian Army Cadet Unit". John Muir, Captain (AAC), has written a fascinated history of the Echuca Cadets. In this booklet describes the chequred progress of cadets in Victoria and nationally, and especially the fortunes of the Echuca Cadet Unit. The book brings to our attention the personalities, the uniform, the arms, and the participation in cadet camps and 'shooting competitions' at a variety of localities over the years.

John Muir

John Muir, Captain (AAC), was born in Echuca, Victoria. Educated at the Echuca State School and Echuca High School he became interested in Cadets at an early age. Discovering evidence of Cadets at the State School in the 1880s he began his Army Cadet research. He formed the Regional Cadet Unit in Echuca in 1987, and when the Lieutenant Colonel Commanding Cadets in Victoria learned of his interest in Cadet History he created the position of Army Cadet Historian John was instrumental in forming the Cadet Unit in Broadford, Victoria, in 2001. He has traveled widely conducting research, collecting memorabilia for a Cadet Museum and giving historical presentations.

Cpt. Muir in this booklet, "Cadets in Echuca", describes the chequred progress of cadets in Victoria and nationally, and especially the fortunes of the Echuca Cadet Unit. The book brings to our attention the personalities, the uniform, the arms, and the participation in cadet camps and 'shooting competitions' at a variety of localities over the years. We are told about the Echuca Cadet who enlisted and served in the 1914-18 war before having the destinct honour of playing the Last Post in front of thousands in Trafalgar Square London on the cesation of hostilities at the conclusion of World War I. The book records the participation of the cadets in Queen Elizabeth's visit to Echuca in 1954 and documents the host of trophies and awards won by Echuca Cadets over the past 120 years.
