Individual Swedish Schools: Jonstorp School

Figure 1.--Here we see the Jonstorp in 1940. The girls all wear dresses. The boys wear shirts, jackets, and sweaters with short pants, knickers, and long pants. Some of the younger boys are barefoot. This seems more varied than one would see at many European schools at the time. Notice the wood scjool and forrest in the background.

The Jonstorp school looks to be a small rural primary school. There were about 30 children of different ages. It is probably a good example of village schools in Sweden. Jonstorp is a village in Skåne County, the southernmost county, or län, of Sweden. We have two images from the school. These photos were taken in the village primary school. The first photograph was taken in 1940. The girls all wear dresses. The boys wear shirts, jackets, and sweaters with short pants, knickers, and long pants. Some of the younger boys are barefoot. This seems more varied than one would see at many European schools at the time. Here we have a good view of the school. Notice the wood school and forrest in the background. We're not sure what colors schools were paintedvin Sweden. Another photograph was taken 10 years later in 1950. All of the girls wear dresses and most are still wearing pinafores.

The Village

Jonstorp is a village in Skåne County, the southernmost county, or län, of Sweden. We do not know anything more about the village. But it seems to be a small village in a heavily forrested area.

The School

The Jonstorp school looks to be a small rural primary school. It is probably a good example of village schools in Sweden. There presumably was about an 8-year program, but we do not yet have the details. Here we have a good view of the school. Notice the wood school and forrest in the background. We're not sure what colors schools were painted in Sweden.

The Class

There were about 30 children of different ages at the school i 1940. What we see seems to be the entire school rather than a single class. The 1950 school portrait looks more like a class group.

Chronology

We have two images from the village primary school.

The 1940s

The photograph here was taken in 1940 (figure 1). The girls all wear dresses with pinafores. Presumably the pinafores were a school rule as all the girls are wearing them. We are unsure to what extent this was common throyghout Sweden. The boys wear shirts, jackets, and sweaters with short pants, knickers, and long pants. Some of the younger boys are barefoot. This seems more varied than one would see at many European schools at the time. The photograph must have been taken on a warm day. The children, of course, would have been dressed very differently during much of the schoo; year during the fall and winter.

The 1950s

Another photograph was taken 10 years later after the first in 1950. This looks more like a class group than the entire school. We notice the same perspective with the school and wood in the background, although perhaps from a different side. If so the school ws clearly set in a wood rather than in the middle of the village. All of the girls wear dresses and most are still wearing pinafores. This suggests that the school strongly promoted it, but perhaps did not require it. The boys wear mostly sweaters with knickers. We believe a factor here was that the eather had turned a little cool. In warm weather some of the boys probably wold have worn short pants. Interestingly none of the boys wear long pants.
