U.S. School Clothes: Girard Academy (Eire Pennsylvania)

Figure 1.-- Here we have a photo taken about 1891. The photo was taken at the back of the school. It seems a substantial building. Notice the wooden door and shutters. While public schools were coeducational, private schools were often single gender. The Girard Academy, however, was coeducational. The children seem quite well dressed. Notice the different styles of caps and hats. One child in the lfront role who looks to be a boy seems to be wearing a skirted garment, probably a kilt suit.

The Girard Academy was located in Erie Pennsylvania. We know very little about the school. As its name is "academy" it would have been a private school. It appears to have been associated with the Girard Alliance Church. Here we have a photo taken about 1891. The photo was taken at the back of the school. It seems a substantial building. Notice the wooden door and shutters. While public schools were coeducational, private schools were often single gender. The Girard Academy, however, was coeducational. That was not common. Notice the barefoot boy in the front row.
