Individual U.S. School: Albany Elementary School (1911)

Figure 1.-- This class portrait came from Albany, which leads us to believe that the school might well have been in that area of the state. Of course this is just a guess. There is no dount the date here because 1911 has been chalked on the walls of the school. The children look like 4th or 5th graders to us (about 9 or 10 year olds). The boys are all wearing knee pants with black long stockings and (in most cases) long underwear which tends to make the stockings look very lumpy.

This class portrait came from Albany, which leads us to believe that the school might well have been in that area of the state. Of course this is just a guess. There is no dount the date here because 1911 has been chalked on the walls of the school. The children look like 4th or 5th graders to us (about 9 or 10 year olds). The boys are all wearing knee pants or knickers with black long stockings and (in most cases) long underwear which tends to make the stockings look very lumpy. Probably the boys just accepted the lumpy look as inevitable, but I read recently a memoir by a grandmother (from a local newspaper) who pointed out that girls hated the lumpy appearance and when out from under the oversight of their mothers (who worried about chills and colds), the girls would often "unfasten their garters, roll the stockings down so that they could roll up the long underwear under their skirts, then reattach the supporters to their stockings for a smoother appearance." Of course before returning home, they had to rearrange their stockings and underwear to convince their mothers that nothing had been changed since getting dressed in the morning. The boys wouldn't have bothered, I think. The children look very middle class and dressed in their normal school attire rather than especially dressed up for a school photograph. Some of the girls wear pinafores. A few have different-colored hair bows. A few of the boys wear suit jackets but neckties are not much in evidence. Several boys wear sweaters or just a blouse. The hightop shoes are typical of the period.
