Australian School Uniform: Blazer Styles

Figure 1.--This Australian prep school has a uniquely styled blazer. This is the only school HBC knows of that had such a destinctive blazer.

The blazer is today primarily worn by private school boys, both prep schools and secondary schools, although some of the schools have suits rather than blazers. The styling is basically the English school blazer. They come in a wide range of colors, although blazers in Australia have generally been more subduded than the many bright colors and stripes that English preparatory school boys once wore. Piped blazers, however, are popular. Some schools have grey suits rather thn a colored blazer and grey trousers. We have also notice some schools wearing black blazers with black trousers, although grey trousers are much more common. One prep school has a uniquely stlyled blazer--with miliarity styles sleeves.

Colors

Australian blazers come in a wide range of colors, although blazers in Australia have generally been more subduded than the many bright colors and stripes that English preparatory school boys once wore. We believe that blue is an especially popular color.

Stripes

Striped blazers are currently not very common in Australia. We have noted a few schools where are worn.

Piping

Piped blazers appear to be popular in Australia. They are worn a t several private scgools, both prep schools and secondary schools.

Black

We have also notice some schools wearing black blazers with black trousers, although grey trousers are much more common.

Suits

Some of the schools have suits rather than blazers. Some schools have grey suits rather than a colored blazer and grey trousers. Almost always these suits are grey.

Other

One prep school has a uniquely stlyled blazer--with miliarity styles sleeves. The grey blazers have military styled red embroidery. There are other military stylistic elements such as epaulets and pocket flaps. There is also a belt element at the back. This is quite a destinctive style that HBC has not seen at any other school. This appears to be the boys' Sunday uniform.
