School Uniform Garments: Jumpers/Sweaters--Chronology

Figure 1.--England is located at a surorisingly northern lattitude. It can be a chilly place, especially on a drizzy day, and there are normally a lot of them. Schools did not used to be as well heated as they are today. The most common jumper became the "V" neck to show the tie, but there were many other styles. Almost all were pullovers. Many countries around the workld have adopted English school uniform sweaters.

The use of sweaters varies greatly from country to country. This is of course a geopgraphic artifact related to climate. The northern countrues with temperate climates are those where children most commonly wear sweaters to school. Themore mortherly countrie (Britain, Canada, Russia, Scandinavia, ect.) are those where sweaters are most common. The same is true of the more southerly ltitudes, but there are fewer countries and smaller countries (Argentina, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa, ect.) located there. Of course elevation is also a factor. So you see school children in some countries at high altitudes (Bolivia, Butan, Nepal, Tibet, ect) wearing sweater. And this inckudes regions in some countries, including tropical countries (Ecuador and India). The cprevalence of sweaters not only variy from country to country, but also the tyoe and styles of sweatrs. A few countries have prove especiually impoirtant in setting sweater styles. England is by far the most important and English styles have influenced sweater styles at schools allover the world,in part because of the Briish Empire. Scandinavian countries have influenced sweater styles, but inlike Englnd, not school unofirm styles. Rather individual children wear brightly colored Scandinavian ski sweaters.

England is located at a surorisingly northern lattitude. It can be a chilly place, especially on a drizzy day, and there are normally a lot of them. Schools did not used to be as well heated as they are today. The most common jumper became the "V" neck to show the tie, but there were many other styles. Almost all were pullovers, but girls at some schools wore cardigans. Many schools once required boys to wear their blazers while at school, but this rule is now rarely observed. Private schools still generally have blazers, but boys often geberally wear just their jumpers during the school day. Boys at many comprehensives in the 1990s began wearing mostly jumpers without blazers. Many countries around the workld have adopted English school uniform sweaters.

Germany

New Zealand

Sweaters are a very common school uniform item in New Zealand. Many schools have blazers, but do not require that they be worn. At many schools boys instead wear sweaters for every day. Sweaters are often worn by both boys and girls, usully the same style. Most school uniforms sweaters were grey. This was especially the case where boys wore grey shorts. While most school uniform sweaters were grey, we have also seen green, blue, brown, and green sweaters. There are also white sweaters to be worn for cricket. The sweaters are mostly "V" neck so that they can be worn with ties. Many school uniform sweaters were all grey. The sweaters were, however, commonly done with trim in the school colors done at the neck, or sometimes the wrist cuffs and waistband as well. .

Russia

Scotland

Scotland is located north of England. It can be quite chilly in Scotland even during summer months. Thus Scottishboys often wear their jumpers or sweaters. Dome schools had white sweaters. They were often worn for games, but at least one school worr them as their principal school jumper. The most common jumpers are grey sweaters. A few schools have colored sweaters, but most have grey sweaters. The grey sweaters often had trim.
