English Naval Cadet: Prince Albert

Figure 1.--This is Prince Albert in his cadet uniform, probably taken about 1908.

This is another photograph of a young boy in a Midshipmans / Cadets uniform. In this cas it is Prince Albert who eventually became King George VI husband to the late Queen Mother. There are also have pictures of his brother David (Edward VIII/Duke of Windsor) in a similar uniform and various other siblings in sailor.

Prince Albert

Prince Albert was the second son of George V and a great-granson to Queen Victoria. It was never expected that ould be king. As a boy he always deferred to his more outgoing older brother--David who would become Edward VIII. Prince Albert was a shy young man and developed a serious sutter which he never lost. His father would become impatient with the stuttering and his rater cruel comments, intendted to cure it, just made matters worse.

Cadet Service

The first school Prince Albert and his older brother David attended was the Royal Naval School at Osborne. It was the first school that either boy had ever attended and neither was prepared socially or academically. Mathematics was a special problem for Albert. Neither boy was used to dealing with other children and had quite a hard time of it. They were reportedly relentlessly hazed by the other cadets. Prince Albert began a 1-2 years after his brother, I think about 1908, but I have to ckeck that. He also had a difficult time of it at first, primarily because of his stuttering. Albert does not seem to have resented the experience, however, as much as his older brother did. Albert's skill in sports helped. He came to feel at home in the Navy, assuming that it would be his life's calling.

Uniform

Prince Albert wears a dark peaked military cap with a Royal Navy badge. It is the same badge that is still worn today. He wears a double breasted jacket with brass buttons and lapel decorations which are the insignisof rank. Cadets of course were destined to be officers in the Navy.

Older Brother

There are also have pictures of his brother David (Edward VIII/Duke of Windsor) in a similar uniform and various other siblings in sailor.
