Boys' Uniforms: Sports and Athletics--Archery

Figure 1.--Japanese archery is called kyudo. The participants wear traditional outfits when participating. I'm not sure just where the sport is conducted. Note the size of the bow.

We have not yet developed any information on the sport of archery. The bow and arrow had been a critical weapon of war for centuries. The English longbow had been England's kep weapon in wars with France. So much sow that the Crown required men to practice archery and dispaired that developing sports were distracting men from developing archery skills. We notice Victorins enjoying archery as a diversion. We do not know if this was a continuation of historic trends, but a diversion reserected after being discarded. Muskets began replacing longbows and crossbows in the 15th century and had not been an important weapon in Europe since the 16th century. I'm less sure about hunting. We do not yet have a archery page, but there is a German archery page. We notice that archery in some countries such as Japan, archery is not just the sport itself, but also elements of traditional culture.

Military Weapon

The bow and arrow had been a critical weapon of war for centuries. The English longbow had been England's kep weapon in wars with France. So much sow that the Crown required men to practice archery and dispaired that developing sports were distracting men from developing archery skills. Muskets began replacing longbows and crossbows in the 15th century and had not been an important weapon in Europe since the 16th century.

Sport History

We have not yet developed any information on the sport of archery. We notice Victorins enjoying archery as a diversion. We do not know if this was a continuation of historic trends, but a diversion reserected after being discarded as weapon of war.

Hunting

I'm less sure about hunting.

Countries

We do not yet have many archery country pages, but have begun working on some. Hopefully HBC readers will provide us some information on archery in their respective countries.

America

When we think about archery and America we of course first think about Native Americans. Native Americans apparently haf flint weapns such as spear points and arrowheads when they arrived in North America. The Clovis Point in fact was for ywars at the center of the effort by Anthropolgists to understand Native Americans. We know very little about the sport of archery in America. Children once got bows with suction cup arrows that could be used to play Cowboys and Indians. These are now considered too dangerous. We believe that most American children experience archery at summer camp. Some adults also use arrows for hunting.

England

Germany

We have little information about archery in Gemany. We have noted German and other European children practicing archery. We are not sure to what extent if any this interested is associated with American native Americans. Europe has a long history of warfare associate with bows and arrows. Of course archery has also become a sport in its own right. Archery is an individual rather than a team sport and thus there are no uniforms associated with archery. The boys involved wear their regular clothes.

Japan

We notice that archery in some countries such as Japan, archery is not just the sport itself, but also elements of traditional culture. Japanese archery is called kyudo. The participants wear traditional outfits when participating. I'm not sure just where the sport is conducted. I don't think it is organized at schools.
