Cold Weather Clothes: Scarf

Figure 1.--This Dutch boy in 1910 wears a scarve to keep him warm in the cold weather. I'm not sure what kind of cap he is wearing. It looks to be a beret that has been pulled down.

Boys, especially boys, in northern areas wore scarves during the winter. At first they wew stuffed in the collar opening of your jacket. After a while boys would wear them like a western bandit over their mouths. They were not worn as English school boys did, casually more for show than to keep warm. I believe they were also commonly worn in Scandinavia, but have few details at this time.

Material

The winter scarfe was traditionally a woolen garment. Many are now made on synthetic fabrics.

Wearing Scarves

American boys wearing cscarves at first they wew stuffed in the collar opening of your jacket. After a while as it got colder, boys would wear them like a western bandit over their mouths. They were not worn as English school boys did, casually more for show than to keep warm. One American boy remembers how he wore his scarve to school in the 1950s--once it had turned fiercely cold. "We wore them tied across our mouths and knotted at the back of our neck like bandits. We'd strech them tight, and line up the fringe just below our nose. Any words you tried to speak through the scarf would come out in muffles. As you walked, your breath would blow back at you in small, hot welcome blasts. You'd also be trying to breathe through your nostrils, and if you had a runny nose--and memory wishes to say that we were never once without colds, little crusty icicles would start to form on the outside of the scarf. I think they formed all the quickjer when our noses ran."

School Scarves

Private schoolboys often wore scarves during the winter. The scarves would be in colors matching their uniforms. The most common type of scarve was quite long so it could be wrapped secuely around the neck. It usually had alternating horizontal bands in two colors. There was a fringe on both ends. This style has proved so popular that many scarves for general sale has been produced styled like these scarves.
