Figure 1.--This image taken in the 1950s shows French Scouts wearing sweaters ticked into their belted shorts. Noticed how they wore their sweaters and belts was standardized. |
One can also tuck the lower part of the sweater in the trousers skirts and
underline the waist by a belt in the loops on the trousers. This was mandatory in
the old times for the scouts in France and although not a scout I remember having noticed this fad in the 1950s.
After World War II the trend is to put the sweater inside the short trousers and to wear a belt. Also this is true for scouts and non-scouts although it seems to me that the
scouts have kept this habit a bit longer than the civilians. Scouts de France : photo 1 shows a description of the uniform from the Scout de France review .This is in 1963. Photo 2
shows scouts in 1956, from Mason the official scout photographer. Photo 3 is
from the Scout de France review, 1963.
Photo 4 and 5 (photo 4 is from a book published in 1948, photo 5 is
myself in vacation in Les Sables d'Olonne, on the Atlantic seaside in 1954). Can't you
see all the similarities ??? The sweaters
and the cardigan in the short trousers, the
belts, the short trousers which seem too long to us and that we shorten by rolling
up the bottom. Even hair styles followed the trend! The only difference is I wear tennis shoes and they wear sandals. The trend (or fashion, as you like) must have been strong!
