Native American Lore: Unidentified Scene (United States, mid-1950s)

Figure 1.--Indian lore activities abd costumes varied greatly in attention to detail. Mostly they were very basic reditions. We note, however, some rather elaborate undertakings. These were often associated witth summer camps. The scene here is undated, but we believe was staged during the 1950s, in part because of a period car in the background. Put the cursor in the image for another view.

We have found some Native American lore programs in settings that we can not readiily identify. They may well be simmer camp activities or perhaps some kind of civilc or other festival It is often very difficult to tell unless the photograph is identified. We note one very elaborate Native American depiction in a wide open field without any clues whatsoever, just elaborately costumed boys and horses--a rarilty in Native American lore programs. The boys are done up so elaborately, it is almost as if they are in a movie or some kind of pagent. A car in the background dates the iscane to the mid-50s. It is an early Kodacolor print. Given the age of the boys, I don't think the horses were part of a Native American program. This could be just a photograph taken for some reasons than a real program. Unfortunately we just dont know anything about this group. A reader writes, "If I had to guess it had to be a summer program due to the no shirts etc. of Indian clothing which then makes me think it is some type of summer program, scouts, camp etc." I agree it is cerainly a summer scene. I don't think, however, that it is a Scout event or even a summer camp. The horses are part of the reason here. I don't think that Scout camps and most summer camps had horses like this. And also note that there are not acoutements of camp life in the background, just aide open field. So we are not sure just what the group here is.
