Long Stockings Worn with Knickers


Figure 1.--These Iowa boys in 1911 were photographed in various kninds of knicker suits. The older boy wears plain knickers. The middle boy wears blouse with a large POeter Pan collar while the younger boy haa a middy blouse. All three boys wear above the knee knickers with dark long stockings. Notice how the boy on the right has knickers that have fallen down over one knee.

Boys usually continued wearing wore dark stockings with the knickers that for the most part replaced kneepants during the 1910s. Knickers became increasingly popular and by the 1920s were increasingly worn with knee socks. Many knickers suits in the 1910s and 20s were made to be worn buckled above the knee. These knickers were mostly worn with long above the knee stockings, although some boys wore them with knee socks. Early in the 1920s, kneesocks relaced longstockings for boys wearing kickers.

Chronology

Long stockings were still widely wornnin the eralyb20th century--especially in America. Boys usually continued wearing wore dark stockings with the knickers that for the most part replaced kneepants during the 1910s. Knickers became increasingly popular and by the 1920s were increasingly worn with knee socks. Even so large numbers of boys still wore long stockinhs--especially during the cold weather. After the early 1920s they were mostly worn by younger boys and this less commonly with knickers. Long stockings were still being worn in the early 1950s, but buy this timeno longer with knickers.

Age

Boys of all ages wore kneepants and knickers with long stockings before World War I (1914-18). This included older teenagers still attending high school. Virtually all of these boys wore long stockings with their knickers.

After the War, high school boys still wore knickers, but less commonly. By the 1930s knickers were mostly being worn by pre-teens or younger teenagers and with kneesocks. By the mid 1920s the younger boys wearing short pants were the ones still wearing long stockings, but thesecboys often did not yet wear knickers.

Color

Note that the long stockings boys wore with knickers were prinmarily dark colors. As boys began wearing long stockings with short pants, the klighter colored brown and tan stockings became more common.

Type

The boys wearing knickers with long stockings primarikly wore above the knee knickers. This was the prinary style in vogue during the 1910s. By the beginning of the 1920s boys began wearing their knickers with kneesocks and at the smae time the below the knee knickers became more popular.

Clothing

Many knickers suits in the 1910s and 20s were made to be worn buckled above the knee. These knickers were mostly worn with long above the knee stockings, although some boys wore them with knee socks. Early in the 1920s, kneesocks relaced longstockings for boys wearing kickers.

Older boys wore plain knickers or knickers with suits that had adult looking jackets. Younger boys mighr wear knickers with middy blouses, tunic syits or other juvenile looking blouse.
