American Children: Coordinated Outfits and Hair (about 1905)

Figure 1.--This charming American family portarit is undated. The clothing and hair styles as well as the photograph format lead us to believe that it was taken about 1905. Mother has outfitted the children differently, but similar hair styles. Even so there are subtle differences in the hair styling. Image courtesy of the RG collection.

This charming American family portarit is undated. It is a portrait of an American brother and sister. They were photographed in Washington, Pennsylvania. The boy has rather short ringleted hair with a white hair on the side. He wear a dark blue or black little lord Fauntleroy suit. Note the extremely large ruffled collar. He holds flowers in his lap. The older sister is in a fancy white dress. Her hair is held in place with two white hair bow. The clothing and hair styles as well as the photograph format lead us to believe that it was taken about 1905. Mother has outfitted the children differently, but similar hair styles. The more common option was coordinated clothing. Even so there are subtle differences in the hair styling. Both children have hair bows, but note the boy only has one hair bow. Note the girl's hair is pated in the middle rather than the side and her hasir is done in loosde rather than tight ringlets. Curiously we note that with families with boys and girls, it was often the oy who got the tight ringlets.
