Trouser Suspension: H-Bar Ages

Figure 1.--This photograph at the Škoní Rok School in Czechoslovakia during 1961 shows a 2nd grade class. Several of the boys wear H-bar pants and one of the girls wears H-bar skirts. They would be about 7-8 years old. We do not notice much older boys wearing H-bar pants, but our archive is limited. Notice the boys used their H-bar straps for award pins.

All types of suspender shorts were mostly worm by younger boys because they did not yet have developed waists helpful when using belts. H-bar pants seem to have been worn generally by even younger boys than wore suspender pants. A good example of the age conventions here is a photograph of the former German royal familyabout 1952. The two oldest boys wear regular shorts. The next youngest boys wears suspender shorts and the youngest boy wears H-bar shorts. They were most popular for younger boys since they're less careful about keeping their suspenders from falling off. The H-bar cross piece of course serves to keep the suspenders in place. The age range of the boys wearing them, however varied over time. We still have a fairly limited archive of images with boys wearing H-bar pants. We suspect that in the 1920s-40s boys up to about 10 or 11 years of age wore them, but even then they were most commoln among younger school children. We note that after World War II that older Czech boys who wore suspenders didn't have the H-bar. It looks like H-bar suspender pants were worn by boys up to 2nd grade in the 60s, but only up to 1st grade in the 70s.

Conventions

All types of suspender shorts were mostly worm by younger boys because they did not yet have developed waists helpful when using belts. H-bar pants seem to have been worn generally by even younger boys than wore suspender pants. A good example of the age conventions here is a photograph of the former German royal family about 1952. The two oldest boys wear regular shorts. The next youngest boys wears suspender shorts and the youngest boy wears H-bar shorts. They were most popular for younger boys since they're less careful about keeping their suspenders from falling off. Here a utilitarian device became a fashion for younger children. The H-bar cross piece of course serves to keep the suspenders in place.

Age Range

The age range of the boys wearing them, however varied over time. We still have a fairly limited archive of images with boys wearing H-bar pants. We suspect that in the 1920s-40s boys up to about 10 or 11 years of age wore them, but even then they were most commoln among younger school children. We note that after World War II that older Czech boys who wore suspenders didn't have the H-bar. It looks like H-bar suspender pants were worn by boys up to 2nd grade in the 60s, but only up to 1st grade in the 70s.

3 year olds

We notice a styling German mother in 1939 who has out fitted her three sons who look to be about 3-6 years old in matching H-bar shorts outfits.

4 year olds

We note a German boy, probably in the 1920s that looks to be about 4 years old. We notice a very young Swedish boy about 4-5 years old wearing H-bar shorts in 1942. Generally speaking, H-bar panrs were not very common in Sweden.

5 year olds

We notice 5 year olds kindergarden children wearing H-bar shorts at an ethnic German school in Romania during the 1930. The German boy from the former royal family wearing H-bar shorts in 1952 looks to be about 5 years old. We notice a Finish boy who looks to be about 5 years old wearing H-bar shorts in the 1950s. We notice Russian kindergarten children about 1960. Some look younger thn 5 years old. We note a Latvian boy who looks to be about 5 years old.

6 year olds

We note that after World War II that older Czech boys who wore suspenders didn't have the H-bar. It looks like H-bar suspender pants were worn by boys up to 2nd grade in the 60s, but only up to 1st grade in the 70s. These Czech children in 1961 wear H-bar fashions (figure 1). They are in the 2nd grade which would mean 7-8 year olds. We note a London boy in 2002. He looks to be about 6 years old.

7 year olds

8 year olds

We note many boys in NAZI occupied Poland wearing H-bar shorts. We do not know the age of the children, but would guess that they were about 8 years old.

9 year olds

10 year olds

We suspect that in the 1920s-40s boys up to about 10 or 11 years of age wore H-bar pants, but even then they were most common among younger school children.
