Pantalettes: Boys Clothing--Jackets

Figure 1.--This little boy was probably photographed in the 1870s. He wears a velvet, front buttoning jacket with rather large pantalettes.

Similar to the tunic is a jacket-like garment worn with pantalettes. The jacket is worn much like a tunic, although it has front button openings. The tunic has no front openings like most boys' garments. I have noted on a few instances of this style. It appears to have been a style worn in the mid-19th century, probanly from anot the 1940s-70s, but this requires further assessment. I'm not sure what kind of hosiery was commonly worn the boy here wears short white socks. Generally refined shoes like strap shoes were worn rather than heavy boots.
