Figure 1.--Here we see the leg closure on the kneepanrs. Notice the ornamental silk-covered buttons, buckle, and bow. Click on the image to see an enlargement of the collar.

There is also a cotton batiste shirtwaist . Here the term shirtwaist and blouse can be ysed synamously. The shirtwaist wascorated in tucks and elaborate cutwork and whitework embroidery. The blouse has a large decorated collar, but no where as large as some Fauntleroy blouse s we have seen. The blouse's large collar, ruffled front and sleeve cuffs were made to show with the open cut-away design of the jacket. Notice that the blouse has decorated wrist trim that can be turned up pver the jacket sleecve at the wrist. The wrist trim matches that of the collar trim. Also notice the band at the waistline of the blouse. This provided a strong band for the buttons to hold up the trousers. This is why the blouses boys wore at the time often seemed to blouse out at the waistline. we are not sure how to date this blouse. We would estimate the 1890s. Earlier in the 1880s there may have been more lace. Later in the 1900s there may have been less lace and more likely ruffles for decoractive trim.
