Little Lord Fauntleroy Merchandise: Playing Card Images

Figure 1.--This set of playing cards was made with Little Lord Fauntleroy as the jocker and on the ace and with a Fauntleroy image on the back of the cards.

Some of the Fauntleroy decks had images of Cedric on the cards themselves. This was most common for the aces or jokers. I do not know of any Fauntleroy cards that ad othher than normal face cards. One could imagine the Eark as king and Cedric's mother as queen. HBC knows, however, of no such cards. Some cards, but not all, have Fauntleroy images on the back of the cards. Some of tbe Fauntleroy decks have plain backs. Others have specialized Fauntleroy designs. HBC had thought that this was a relative rarity, but in fact there was quite a variety of different Fauntleroy decks, both varied card faces and card backs. The number of different Fauntleroy cards testify to how popular the Fauntleroy syoru was in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The United States Playing Card Company made Bicycle cards. They were the most important manufacturer of playing cards in the United States. It is thus understandable that they would license such an important image as Little Lord Fauntleroy. The cards pictures here were mirature "toy" cards. A advertising card with a handline reads, "24 Little Duke Playing Cards." The text reads, "The smallest of them all--measuring only 1 1/4" x 1 3/4". Used for children's play cards. Ideal for playing Pantomine, Soloyare, etc.
