American Little Lord Fauntleroy Suits: Color

Figure 1.--Here we have a photographic image which was painted on. The face has been left without paint, but colored paints were used for the rest of the image. Notice the dark blue suit and redand blue olaid bow. The whicker chair suggests the portrait was taken about 1900. The prtrait came from a famuly in the Hudson Valley.

Our extensive archive of American boys wearing Fauntleroy suits is almost all black-and-white studio portraits. This provides a great deal of information about the garments and styles, but very little color information. Most of the suits are dark and look to be black in the portraits. There are other sources of information. We know that many mother bought patterns and thus could select the material to be used. This was often, but not always black velvet. There are also colorized portraits as well as painted over portraits in addition to actual paintings. None of these are as relaible as a color photograpph in terns of depicting precise shades. They they do show, however, that other colors were used. And we have some atual vintage suits which clearly show somne of the colors. We think the dark colors included: royal blue, burgundy, and forrest green suits were worn. All of these colors would have shown up as black. In addition to the daek suits we have noted light-colored velvet suits. This included both velvet suits as well as light-weight material for summer wear. We have noted grey Fauntleroy suits. We are less sure about other colors that were used.

Dark-colored Suits

Most of the Fauntleroy suits worn by American boys were dark suits. And as aresult, most look to be black in the black and white portraits of the day. There are other sources of information. We know that many mothers bought patterns and thus could select the material to be used. This was often, but not always black velvet. There are also colorized portraits as well as painted over portraits in addition to actual paintings. None of these are as relaible as a color photograpph in terns of depicting precise shades. They they do show, however, that other colors were used. And we have some actual vintage suits which clearly show some of the colors. We think the dark colors included: dark blue, burgundy, and forrest green suits were worn. Here we see aark blue suit (figure 1). All of these colors would have shown up as black. As best as we can tell, most of the dark suits were black. We do not have any data on this and suspect that it is impossible at this time to produce any, but we think a large portion of the uits were black, but it is clear that not all were and that the colored suits were not rare or unusual.

Light-colored Suits

In addition to the dark Fauntlelroy suits we have noted light-colored velvet suits. They were not as common as the dark suits, but they were not rare. We think light-weight/light-colored suits were less common because many boys would have work just their blouses without a jacket during the summer. This included both velvet suits as well as light-weight material for summer wear. Unfortunately, we do not have a good idea about the colors of these light-colored suits. The most likely colors would be blue, brown, cream, green, and grey, but we we can not yet confirm the extent to which these colors were used. We have noted grey velvet Fauntleroy suits. A Sargeant painting depicted one. We are less sure about other colors that were used in these light-colored suits.
