German Sailor Suits: Unidentified Brothers (1912)

Here we see two boys, presumably brothers, wearing similar but not identical kneepants sailor suits. We do not know the boys' names or anything about the family. Unfortunately all we know for sure is that the portrait was taken in 1912. The suits are made from stripped material. I'm not sure what the color of the suit was. The suits are rather curious because if you look very carefully you can see that in one suit the stripes are vertical. In the other the material is horizontal or at least on part od the suit such as the sleeves and sailor collar were horizontal. This is curious because for some reason the sztripes in sailor suits were almost always vertical. I'm not sure why. We suspect that these suits were hand sewn by the boys' mother. Also note the boys' close-cropped hair which was very common at the time for boys wearing sailor suits. This was generally the case before World War I. After the War, the sailor suit continued to be a popular garment, but except for the very early 20s, boys did not wear it with cropped heads. This was in part because this hair style became less common. It was allso because the sailor suit became seen as a middle-class style.
