Turkish Sailor Suits

Figure 1.--HBC has only one image of a Turkish boy weraing a sailor suit. It is a traditionall styled sailor suit with long pants. We do not know to what extent Turkish boys wore kneepant or short pants sailor suits.

HBC know little about Turkish boys wearing sailor suits. We have seen some images of Turkish boys wearing sailor suits, but do think it was very common. We do know that they were stronly influenced by the Germans politically, so perhaps some fashions were also affected. Kemal Attaturk seized power in the 1920s and began a westernization campaign which again may have affected boys fashions. We have only one image of a Turkish boy weraing a sailor suit. It is a traditionall styled sailor suit with long pants. We do not know to what extent Turkish boys wore kneepant or short pants sailor suits. The Ottoman Turks have operated powerful naval fleets, but by the early 20th century had only a small force when they entered World War I against England. The Turks had only one battleship. Two more battleships and several other modern vessels had been built in British shipyards, but once World War I broke out with the Germans, the British refused to deliver them. This was in fact a factor in Turkey's decission in 1914 to enter the War on the side of the Central Powers (Germany and Austria). The Turkish Navy and a few German vessels were put under the command of a German admiral. The Turkish Navy does not seem to have inspired public interest, and thus the popularity of the sailor suit, as was the case in many European countries.
