Stocking Supporters and Waist Manufacturers: H & W

H & W underwaists stocking supporters
Figure 1.-- H & W was a corset makeractive at the turn of the 20th century. They also made underwaists and stocking supporters for children. The advert here is undated. It looks like it is from the 1890s, probably the late 1890s, but it could easily have been from the early 1900s.

H & W waists were a major brand and widely advertised during the 1890s-1910s. We at first thought thst the company was H & W, but this was a brandname. The manufacturers were the Bevoise Waist Company, Flushing, New York. We know little the about the Bevoise Waist Company at this time. It appears to have been primarily a corset maker. Its primary brand was H & W. The company was based in Newark, New Jersey. They specialized in women's corsets and undergarments. Their advertising motto was "Style, Health and Comfort from Infancy to Old Age." Most of their waists were made for women and girls, but they also made underwaists for children, both boys and girls. The company was active at the turn of the 20th century and the early 20th century. We have noted ads which included children's underwaists and stocking supporters (figure 1). The advert here is undated. It looks like it is from the 1890s, probably the late-1890s, but it could easily have been from the early 1900s.

Brands

H & W waists were a major brand and widely advertised during the 1890s-1910s. They specialized in women's corsets and undergarments. Their advertising motto was "Style, Health and Comfort from Infancy to Old Age." Most of their waists were made for women and girls, but they also made underwaists for children, both boys and girls. Waists

For two of the boys waists shown here, compare the Wards Double Ve waist and also the Fuller waist. Both of these date from 1900-01 seem close in time to the H & W models. What the H&W company refers to as a "suspender waist" (because of the elastic strips at the back that attach to the boy's trousers) seems to be almost the same thing as the Ward's "Double Ve" waist (with the same suspender straps at the back for the trousers). What is interesting here is the different terminology for nearly the same garment. This is one of the many examples of the varying use of teminology that makes assessing these and other period garments rather complicated.

Advertisements

We note several advertisements for H & W waists. The first is from a 1896 newspaper. We have also noted an ad for H & W corsets dated 1906 a 1913 magazine (Delineator) advertisements for waists. The last H & W advertisement we have found was one in the Ladies Home Journal (October 1914). The ad offered children's "corset waists" made for children 2-12 years of age. So we know the company was active at least up until World War I. We have no further information about the company after the 1914 advert.
