Mein schatz ist aus Tyrol - (Austria/Germany, 1958)

Figure 1.--This film is "Mein schatz ist aus Tyrol", "My Treasure (Love) is in the Alps" or perhaps "My darling is from Tirol". It was made in 1958. I am not sure if it is German or Austrian. The Story is a bit difficult to fathom, but involves a bit of romance some singing and dancing, and of course beautiful Alpine scenery.

This film is "Mein schatz ist aus Tyrol". It is not an easy title to translate. Mein Schatz (literally my treasure) in this context means my dear, my darling, or my love. And "ist aus" means "comes from" or "is from" So the title would be something like "My Treasure is the Tyrol (a part of the Alps). A German reader tells us that a better translation is "My darling is from Tirol". The film was released in 1958. I am not sure if it is German or Austrian. The plot is a bit difficult to fathom, but involves a bit of romance some singing and dancing, and of course beautiful Alpine scenery. Hopefully our German readers will know more about the film. You could say quite forgetable, but the production quality is excellent. The costuming seems very accurate. The main character I believe is called Sigfried Breuer jun. He normally is costumed in lederhosen, as are many of the other children in the film. He also wears a well-used Tyrolean cap.

Filmology

The film was released in 1958. I am not sure if it is German or Austrian. The film was direcyed by Hans Quest.

English Title

HBC has several German readers. Everyone who has commented on this film has translated the title differently. This film is "Mein schatz ist aus Tyrol". It is not an easy title to translate. Mein Schatz (literally my treasure) in this context means my dear, my darling, or my love. And "ist aus" means "comes from" or "is from" So the title would be something like "My Treasure is the Tyrol (a part of the Alps) or "My treasure is in the Tirol. . A German reader tells us that a better translation is "My darling is from Tirol". Another source suggests, "Happy Holidays in Tirol".

Setting

Our Gernan readers disagree as to how to translate the title, but the film is clearly set in the Tyrol. The Tyrol (also spilled Tirol) is the Alpine area of western Austria bordering on Italy. The Süd (Southern) Tyrol is the area awarded to Italy after World War I. The Italians refer to it as Alto Adige. This is interesting because Hitler who claimed to be so concerned about "oppressed" Germans outside the Reich never raised the issue of the Tyrol with Mussolini. The film is set in the Austrian Tyrol.

Chronology

The film is set in contempray times meaning the late 1950s.

Plot

The plot is a bit difficult to fathom, but involves a bit of romance some singing and dancing, and of course beautiful Alpine scenery. Hopefully our German readers will know more about the film.

Costuming

The costuming seems very accurate. The main character I believe is called Sigfried Breuer jun. He normally is costumed in lederhosen, as are many of the other children in the film. A reader complains that this is a stereotipical view of Austrian boys. Of course you would expect this in a Heimat film. The boy also wears a well-used Tyrolean cap.

Cast

Marianne Hold plays the female lead. There are some interesting Schlager singers. The Kessler Twins perform a dancing number in bikinis. I'm not sure what that has to do with the Tyrol. I'm not sure who the boy actores were.

Heimat Film

This is what the Austrians and Germans call a Heimat film. This means a sentimental Alpine productions in regional dialect. These films were popular family fare during the holiday season. There is am amusing, ans almpst required happy ending. That was alsmost a requirement for a Heimat film.

Assessment

You could say that this is a quite forgetable film, but the production quality is excellent. The scenery is spectacular.
