The Munster's Scary Little Christmas - (US, 1996)

Figure 1.--"The Munster's Scary Little Christmas" is set around him because he is having trouble getting adjusted to California. Eddie is home sick for Transylvania and thus does not have the Christmas spirit. The rest of the clan tries to cheer him up.

This group of Munster's just doesn't have the charm of the original TV Munsters. In fact they are a rather embarassing lot. Only an affection for the original Munsters could attracy one to watch this remake. The script is particularly hokey. The original Munster TV scripts were also rather hokey, but the charm of the cast rather made up for the weak scripts. Eddie in this version is not as bad as the rest of the cast. This Eddie is older than the original Eddie, I'd say 12 years old. He wears a burgundy velvet suit with the wide collar and floppy bow. I'm not sure why these Munster remakes use burgundy, I suspect that the producers here are reusing the 1992 costumes. He wears dark knee socks with his suit. Except for his pajamas, this is his only costume. At the beginning of the film he is being teased by the other boys, but not about his velvet suit. Unfortunately that is the last you see the other boys and his one friend. Eddie has quite a big part, in fact the film is set around him because he is having trouble getting adjusted to California. There are only a few really good scenes of him, despite the fact he appears in almost all the scenes. Unfortunately his hair is really scragaly, rather ditracting. Eddie is played by Bug Hall. At the end there is a monster party. I believe that among the guests were another boy. I'm not sure what he was wearing.

Filmology

"The Munster's Scary Little Christmas" was a made for TV movie. This group of Munster's just doesn't have the charm of the original TV Munsters. In fact they are a rather embarassing lot, especially Herman (Sam McMurray) and Grandpa (sandy Baron). Only an affection for the original Munsters could attract one to watch this remake. The script is particularly hokey. Younger kids may like it though.

Cast

All the Munster characters are present for this remake. There is Lily (the vampire mom), Eddie (the young werewolf son,) Herman (the Frankenstein father), Granpa (the vampire mad scientist) grandpa, and Marilyn (the beautiful niece). The original Munster TV scripts were rather hokey, but the charm of the cast rather made up for the weak scripts. Eddie in this version is not as bad as the rest of the cast. This Eddie is older than the original Eddie, I'd say 12 years old. Eddie is played by Bug Hall. Bug is best known for playing another American boy icon, Little Rascal star--Alfalfa. Bug played Alfalfa in the 1994 movie recreation "Little Rascals". Of course playing icons like Alfalfa and Eddie Munster is quite a challenge. Performances wil always be compared to the original. And Bug did quite a nice job with Alfalfa. The performance here is disappointing. We think the make up and script is largeky responsible and not his acting ability. At the end there is a monster Christmas party. I believe that among the guests were another boy. I'm not sure what he was wearing. Santa Clause also makes an appearance.

Plot

At the beginning of the film he is being teased by the other boys, but not about his velvet suit. Unfortunately that is the last you see the other boys and his one friend. Eddie has quite a big part, in fact the film is set around him because he is having trouble getting adjusted to California. Eddie is home sick for Transylvania and thus does not have the Christmas spirit. The rest of the clan tries to cheer him up. Herman tells Eddie, "Just look at this place, Eddie. Awash with Christmas gloom! Good work son! You must be the proudest little wolfie boy around." There are only a few really good shots of Eddie, despite the fact he appears in almost all the scenes. Unfortunately his hair is really scragaly, rather distracting. The film also gives a big play to Grandpa's experiments. Not every one panned the film. One reviewer writes, "... it's a magical film which will be loved by kids and adults alike. As the title suggests, it's set during the fantastic Christmas period where The Munsters get up to all sorts of fun. Oh, and they also receive a visit from many other creatures throughout the world (I think I spotted The Creature from the Black Lagoon at one point)."

Costuming

Eddie wears a shirt pants burgundy velvet suit with the wide Peter Pan collar and floppy bow. It's bit difficult to see details of the jacket, but it looks to be a cut-away jacket. This of course was the clasic Little Lord Fauntleroy jacket style. The trousers seem to be srandard short pants which were not worn as pat of Little Lord Fauntleroy suits. The floppy bow is not very destinctive as it is a rather inconscipuous color, I think grey. I'm not sure why these Munster remakes use burgundy, I suspect that the producers here are reusing the 1992 costumes. He wears dark knee socks with his suit. I'm not sure about the color of the knee socks, but they look black. The knee socks varied quite a bit, but all of the Eddie outfits included short pants and knee pants. Except for his pajamas, this is his only costume Eddie wears in the film. This follows the costuming of the original Munster TV show, although it was shot in black and white and Eddie did not wear a burgandy-colored suit.
