Boys Costumes Depicted in Television Shows: Blue Peter--Mad King Ludwig II (England, 2002)

Figure 1.--A "Blue Peter" program was "Mad King Ludwig II" about the Bavarian monarch who loved to build fairytale castles. King Ludwig was a member of the Wittelsbach dynasty. In the program, the young Ludwig is pictured in a black velvet suit with knee breeches and white collar. Here he is shown playing with a turtle. Notice the building blocks in the background.

One of the BBC's best known childrens' programme is "Blue Peter". I'm not sure when the series began, but it is still produced. It produces programs on a wide range of subjects. A HBC reader in England reports that a program was produced, "Mad King Ludwig II" about the Bavarian monarch who loved to build fairytale castles. King Ludwig was a member of the Wittelsbach dynasty. I have few details about the program, but some attention appears to have been given to Ludwig's boyhood. Ludwig is German for Louis. In the program, the young Ludwig is pictured in a black velvet suit with knee breeches and white collar. There was actually a Mad King Ludwig, actually Ludwig II. He really did build those fairytale castles, but history still debates whether he was actually mad.

Blue Peter

One of the BBC's best known childrens' programme is "Blue Peter". I'm not sure why it is called Blue Peter. Hopefully our British readers will provide us some back ground on this as well as some favorite episodes when they were children. Blue Peter began in the late 1950s and is now a British TV instituton. It is one of the longest running programs on television. The series is still being produced. It produces programs on a wide range of subjects for children.

Mad King Ludwig Episode

A HBC reader in England reports that a program was produced, "Mad King Ludwig II" about the Bavarian monarch who loved to build fairytale castles. King Ludwig was a member of the Wittelsbach dynasty. I have few details about the program. I do not know who played Ludwig or his younger brother. Some attention appears to have been given to Ludwig's boyhood. Here he is seen holding a tortoise (figure 1). Notice the building blocks which look rather like fairytale castles. Apparently he took an interest in building from an early age. Ludwig is German for Louis. In the program, the young Ludwig is pictured in a black velvet suit with knee breeches and white collar.

The Actual King Ludwig

There was actually a Mad King Ludwig, actually Ludwig II. He really did build those fairytale castles, but history still debates whether he was actually mad.
