Uniforms of Boys' Youth Groups: Church Lads' Brigade--Activities

Figure 1.--This image is unidentified, but we believe that this is a Church Lads Brigade summer camp. The card was dated August 4, 1904. Notice that the boys wear long pants or knepants with long stocking.

We have very limited information about actvities pursued by the Church Lads' Brigade. We suspect that they were very similar to the Boys' Brigade with a heavy emphasis on drill and religious activities. We have, however, been unable to obtain detils about CLB activities. Hopefully our British readers will be ble to provide us some details on CLB activities. We do note that the CLB had an active summer camp program. We note in many available images of both BB and CLB summer camping that large tents were used, looking rather like army tents. This suggests that before World War I that there were few if any camps with cabins and other facilities.

Drill

We have very limited information about actvities pursued by the Church Lads' Brigade. We suspect that they were very similar to the Boys' Brigade with a heavy emphasis on drill.

Religious Activity

We also believe that a variety of religious learning activities were persued by the Church Lads.

Summer Camp

We do note that the CLB had an active summer camp program, although we know very little about it. We note in many available images of both BB and CLB summer camping that large tents were used, looking rather like army tents. This suggests that before World War I that there were few if any camps with cabins and other facilities.
