Belgium Vlaamse Nationale Jeugd (VNJ e.V.) Youth Uniforms: Parades

Figure 1.--VJN members always dress up in their full uniforms for patriotic parades which are accompanied by varioys Flemish patriotic flags and banners. Note the seagull on the banners--a symbol associated with the Neherlands and used by some Dutch youth groups.

VNJ boys march and sing and do other things traditional boyscouts like to do. The VNJ appears to put greater emphasis on paraes than the Scouts, perhaps because the VNJ with its commitment to Flemism inepenence or nationlism is given more to public patriotoc displays. The boys always dress up in the full official uniform for these parades. A camping or other informal events, some boys may show up in jeans or not wear their orange kerchiefs. For parades, however, the boys wear the kefchief, grey shirts, black shorts, while socks, and black boots that are are characteristic of the VNJ. On chilly days the boys may wear grey sweaters or jackets. Some of the boys even wear formal looking white gloves. The parades always have patriotic Flemish flags and banners. Some of the banners feature a seagull which is more associated with the Netherlands than Belgium.
