Unidentified German Family Photographic Album: First Boy

Figure 1.--The album begins with what looks to be a newly minted HJ boy, probably 10 years old. This means we would have entered the DJ. The portrait is undated, but we would guess was taken about 1935 or so. One reason we think he has just entered the DJ is his age and the fact that he does not yet have any badges sewn on this shirt. He certainly looks rather proud of himself. Unfortunately there is no caption on the page providing any clues as to his name or where he was from.

The album begins with what looks to be a newly minted HJ boy, probably 10 years old. This means we would have entered the DJ. The portrait is undated, but we would guess was taken about 1935 or so. One reason we think he has just entered the DJ is his age and the fact that he does not yet have hardly any badges sewn on this shirt and his short pants are rather long. Although hard to see, he does have the triangular patch showing where his unit was from. He certainly looks rather proud of himself. Motice the lighting-bolt belt buckle. Unfortunately there is no caption on the page providing any clues as to his name or where he was from. We do believe that he was from Saafeld (Saale). This is a town in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district of Thuringia, a state in southern Germany.

Hiking Back Pack

This phootoograph was taken at the same time as the main portrait here. But we see more of his uniform, including the triangular unit patch. Unfortunartelt, we can't make it out so we are still unsure as to where the boy was from. Perhaps our German readers will be able to make it out. In this photograph he had put on his hiking back pack and he is very smartly standing to attention. Presumably this was something the new Pimpfs were tauught when they first joined the the DJ.

DJ Group

We note a series of photographs of small groups of DJ boys. They are grouped together in the album. We think they are of the boy here and his friends. They seem to be the boys just having fun in and round Saalfeld rather than any organized DJ activity, but these boys are wearing their uniforms. The boys are seen in town, in the country side and in local farms. I'm not sure if this shows that boys often wore their uniforms even when not involved in DJ activities, or perhaps these photogrphs show scenes before or after actual activities.

Flieger HJ

The boy here as he progressed through the HJ seems to have been particularly interested in flying. We see a range of Flieger HJ activities. This was the flying division of the HJ. There were flying activities in regular HJ units, but boys with an avid interest in flying could join special Flieger HJ units. We note both school and field activities. We see both hot air baloons and gliders. And as youth he enlisted in the Luftwaffe during World War II. We don't see our boy here in many of the photographs, but since we see him in the Luftwaffe, we assume that he is in the photographs or took the photographs.

Boat Expedition: Kronprinz

We note a boat excursion aboard the ship Kronprinz which looks to be an excursion ship. The name (Crown Prince) suggests of course it is a pre-World War I ship. We are not sure just where the ship opperated. The boy here was Saalfeld, a town in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district of Thuringia, a state in southern Germany. Possibly it was the Baltic. Thuringia is of course quite a distance from Germany's Baltic sea coast in the north. Perhaps the ship which seems small opperated on a lake or river. We also do not know where the ship was headed. We do note a photograph of a beach resort. Perhps this was where they were headed. The boys seem to have enjoyed the outing and the trip on the ship. We do note a Baltic Sea trip in another HJ album. This was on a much larger ship.
