Unidentified German Family Photographic Album: Schools

Figure 1.--Early in the album of a German family we see a school group. This seems to be the earliest photograph in the album. It looks like a class of younger secondary boys. We know the portrait was taken in 1933, we think the earilest photograph in the album. The problem is that we do not know which of the boys in the portrait is the boy in the family album. We think the first boy is in there somewhere, but we are not sure. The 1933 portrait is labeled Reform - Real - Gymnasium zu Saalfeld.. Click on the omage to see the names.

The 1933 portrait is labeled Reform - Real - Gymnasium zu Saalfeld. A Real Gymnasium is a tradutional secondary school with a classical curriculum, meaning Latin is an important part of the prigram. The boys and teacher are named. This may have been on the inside cover of the album. The names are: Günther Eichhorn Ost Leidenfrost Petzold Patzer Frank Pfeiffer Nowotny Siegert Heindl Zerrauer Rosselmann Himmelreich Moempe Schlöser Rasch Siegritz Hauschild Dr. Soppkuchen Richter Friebel Franke Wächter.

Oberschule Saalfeld

We also notice photographs taken at the Oberschule Saalfeld. Boys at the school are shown building gliders during the 1930s. We are not sure at this time if these were the same school. Boys at the Oberschule Saalfeld, a secondary school (figure 1). An Oberschule was an academicially oriented secondary school with a modern curriculum. They gave more emphasis to math and science than clasical studies. I am not sure if the project here building gliders was coordinated with the HJ program. The boy at the right may be the HJ boy in the family album. He looks a few yeats older than his DJ portrait. Building and flying gliders was a primary activity for the Flieger HJ. I believe Saalfeld is the location of the school. Saalfeld (Saale) is a town in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district of Thuringia, a state in southern Germany. This presumably tells us where the HJ boy was from. The school was founded during the Germamn Empire, but we are not sure just when. Quite a number of its pupils die in World War I. A new acacademic program was introduced during the Weimar Republic (1918-33). The school administrators appear yo have been staunch NAZIs. The program of the school year 1933/34 states: "The year 1933/34 was devoted to Nazi revolution." There were enthusiastic victory celebrations at the school in the early tears of World War II. Again many graduates of the school lost their lives. The strong support for the NAZIs damaged the reputation of the school. After the war, the building serves first as a military hospital and later as a vocational school and a primary school.
