Na Fianna Éireann: Cork Slaugh (Group) Banner

Figure 1.--This photograph of a Na Fianna Eireann group was taken in Cork during 1922 just before the Civil War over the Treaty with Britain. Because it's wartime they are wearing what uniform they had. Note the banner in the middle of the front row. We can not make out what it says.

This photograph of a Na Fianna Eireann group was taken in Cork during 1922 just before the Civil War over the Treaty with Britain. Because it's wartime they are wearing what uniform they had. Note the banner in the middle of the front row. We can not make out what it says. An Irish reader tells us, "No I can't make out what's on the flag at all - it's almost transparent and the legs of the people behind obscure the letters. Another problem is the Irish script making it difficult to identify the letters. I think I see "Na" in the upper left hand corner. The word in the middle looks to be Fianba", but we are guessing it says "Fianna". Unfortunately we can't make out the rest of the writing. An Irish reader writes, "Yes - I think you're right. I was reading it as - ADDA - but in ornate Irish script they do curl round the right leg of an "n" so what I read as "D" would be "n" and so Fianna is probably it (the curly "F" at the front looks like a "P". The Irish for Cork is - Chorcai (for the County) and Corcaigh (for the city) - so that could be the word below - again the ornate "c" on the banner looked like an "o" to me." The banner is clearly not the official sunburst flag. It looks homemade, perhaps by their mums or girl friends. The colors are probably green on green which makes it difficult to make out in black and white. The Cork battalion/sluagh mainly went with De Valera and the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War.
