Young Pioneer Tights: National Trends

Figure 1.--This drawing shows Young Pioneers, both boys and girls, working on some kind of activity at school. The blue scarves show that they are younger children. The illustration came from a 1963 DDR school book for beginning readers "Lesen und Lehrnen".

HBU has noted accounts of Young Pioneers, both boys and girls, in Russia and Germany wearing tights as part of their Young Pioneer unifoms. We do not know what the actual uniform regulations, but we have noted boys wearing them. We believe they were worn in other East Bloc countries with Young Pioneer movements as well. We know for example that Polish boys wore tights, so Young Pioneers presumably did so as well. We do not, however, have confirmation of that. HBU still has limited information on the Young Pioneers and no information at all on the uniform worn in several countries.

Bulgaria

No information available at this time.

Czecheslovakia

No information available at this time.

Germany (DDR)

We have limited unformation about Herman Young Pioneers. Available images, however, show tights being worn as part of Young Pioneer uniforms. They appear to be sceens from school. It may well be that the tights were not a formal part of the uniform, but simply the optional hosiery worn with the uniform. We know, for example, that some younger boys did wear tights to school. The available images show hat it was younger boys that ended to wear tights with their Pioneer uniforms. We do not know if tights were worn as part of a formal dress uniform.

Hungary

No information available at this time.

Poland

We know for example that Polish boys wore tights, so Young Pioneers presumably did so as well.

Romania

Russia (Sovbiet Union)

We note a report from a Pioneer camp in the Soviet Union where for formal occassions the members, both boys and girls, wore white tights.

Yugoslavia

No information available at this time. We know that German clothing styles were popular in Yugoslavia, in part because Yugoslavs often worked in Germany. Tights were one of the Gdrman styles worn. It is thus likely that some Yugoslav Pioneers wore tights.
