Outings and field trips to zoos, museums, and other interesting places were an especially popular activity. These were often essentially the same a school field trips. Some of the most common were the ones to zoos and museums. England of course has been fascinating histical sights including medieval castles and palaces. Most of these outings are selected for some kind of educational value. There were also outings to places just for fun such as amusement parks. Outing Experiences

Here are some of the many places to which Cub outings are planned.

Amusement parks

Most of these outings are selected for some kind of educational value. There were also outings to places just for fun such as amusement parks. These Cubs shown here seem to be on an outing which included a video arcade (figure 1). England until recently did not have a lage number of amusement parks with the exception of the beach piers which were a popular attraction beginning in the late 19th century.

Donkey refuge

We notice a Cub pack at a donkey scantaury. We do not know a great deal about donkey scantuaries. We do know that donkies were popular at English beach resorts. They were used a children's rides and were extremrely popular with the pre-teen children. We are speculating that the refugee was for the donkies that were no longer needed at the beaches. During World War II, beaches became military zones. After the War, the donkies at te beach were never as popular as before. Ther was also increasing concerns with sanittion. We do not know if there was only one or several sanctuaries. The donkies seem well cared for. They were well fed and received vetinarian care. The available images suggest there were only donkies at the sanctuaries.

Events

Trips to special events like air shows or celebrations of various kinds of celebrations are another popular activity.

Historical Sites

England of course has been fascinating histical sights. There are battlefield sites. Of special interest are medieval castles and palaces. Many of these sites have activities especially geared for children. There are even Roman sites like Bath or Hadrians Wall. And here are many even earlier sites like Stonhedge. These an many more are fascinaring tripos for Cubs.

Museums

English Cub Scouts went on a number of trips to many different museums because they were both educational and enjoyable. Outings to museums make for greast Cub trips. London has some of the most famous museums in the world, but there are other important museums located throughout the country. Sone of the modst famous are the Victoria and Albert and the British museums, but there are many smaller museums located throughout the country. These were often essentially the same a school field trips. Some of the museum trips were associated with projects the Cubs were working on. Many were simply general interest visits. one special favorite with many English Scouts is the railroad museum. Most Cub packs were quite insistent that the Cubs be prperly outfitted in their uniforms. The Cubs wore their full uniforms with pride because they were representing their pack in public.

Zoos

Some of the most popular trips are to zoos or in recent yesrs wildlife parks. Before television and all the great modern wildlife shows, children had little access to wild animals. The zoo trips were especially excting to these children. Even modern children, however, love to visit zoos.

Other

Cub packs outings have been made to a wide range of other places. Some packs visit interesting work places like factories, police stations, fire departments, farms, and many other places. One pack leader tells HBC he took his Cubs to see the projection room brfore seeing a movie.

Individual Accounts
