French Boy Scouts: Activities

Figure 1.--Here we see a French Scout group on a beach outing. The image is undated , but we would guess that it was taken before World War II. The boys seem to be wearing very long short pants.

We note many images of French Scouts hiking and camping as well as involved in a wide range of other activities. French Scouting avtivities seem similar to those of other Scouting groups in Europe. We note French Scout outings and trips of various kinds. We do not have, however, detailed information on French Scouting activities. Nor do we see many images suggesting Scouting activities beyond the traditiional ones. Religion appears to be an important part of French Scouiting. The Catholic Church has played an important role in French Scouting. There are different associations in France, some with a Catholic formation and other of a more secular nature. This may be because most of or information on French Scouting is from historical rather than modern images. Hopefully our French readers will tell us more about French Scouting and Scout activities.

Camping

We note many images of French Scouts hiking and camping.

Expositions

We notice events which we would call Expos (short for expositions) in the United States. I'm not sure what they would be called in France. These are events where Cubs and Scouts troops set up booths. Many provide a look at different Scout activities. Others may be entertainments of various sorts, including both games and physical activities. This can be events of different size. It might be done at the local Pack and Troop level or larger groups. In America Councils also sponsor expos. I'm less sure about the arrangements in France.

Hiking

Outings

We note French Scout outings and trips of various kinds. Here e see a group of Scouts on a beach outing (figure 1).

Religion

Religion appears to be an important part of French Scouiting. The Catholic Church has played an important role in French Scouting. There are different associations in France, some with a Catholic formation and other of a more secular nature. There were of course Catholic religious services, but we note activities with a Catholic theme beyond just Sunday religious services.
