Hong Kong Scouting Levels

Figure 1.--Bothboys and girls in Hong Kong enjoy Cubbing. Notice the difference in the caps worn by the boys and girls.

Hong Kong Scouts aew organized rather like Enhlish Scouts. Hong Kong Scouts are divided according to their ages into five sections, namely Grasshopper Scout, Cub Scout, Scout, Venture Scout and Rover Scout. The most import level of Scouting is Cubbing. More Hong Kong boys are involved in Cubbing than any other Scouting level. The names are typical Scout names for these groups, except for the grasshoppers which is a destinctive Chinese name for the new pre-Cub entry level group. Perhaps in Hong Kong, a name like Tiger Cubs was consiere too fierce for the younger boys. In addition, there are various non-Chinese speaking groups as well as Scout groups for handicapped children and youths under rehabilitation programme.

Grasshopper Scouts

The youngest children are the Grasshopper Scouts. The names are typical Scout names for these groups, except for the grasshoppers which is a destinctive Chinese name for the new pre-Cub entry level group. Perhaps in Hong Kong, a name like Tiger Cubs was consiere too fierce for the younger boys. Beavers as they are called in America are an animal not found in China. Grasshoppers aor crickets are a symbol of good luck in China. Traditionally they were kept in small cages for thdir cheerful chirping--rather like birds.

Cubs

The most import level of Scouting is Cubbing. More Hong Kong boys are involved in Cubs than any other Scouting level. We know relatively little about Hong Kong Cubs at this time, other than the uniforms that they wear. The Cubs are boys and girls 8-11 years old. Hopefully our Hong Kong readers will oprovide us some information about the Cubbing program. Hong Kong Cubs continue to wear the traditional green and yellow peaked caps that they are associated with in England, but no longer worn there. Other than the cap, the Cub and Scout uniform is very similar.

Scouts

The Scouts are children 11-16 years of age.The Scout uniform is virtually identical to the Cub uniform, except for the caps.

Venture Scouts

The Venture Scouts are youths age 16-20 years.

Rover Scouts

TheRover Scouts are young adults 17-25 years of age.
