Italian Cub Scout Uniforms: Chronology

Figure 1.--A HBC reader has provide this photograph of Italian Cubs. It is undated, butlooks like it may have been taken in the 1940s. Note the similarity with the British Cub uniform.

HBU does not know when Cubbing was initiated in Italy. Presumably it was after 1916 when cubbing began in England. Thus we are not positive when the first Italaian Cub uniforms were developed. We are also unsure how the Cub uniform developed over time. We know that the Italian Fascists banned Scouting in the 1920s. This means there was no cubbing in the 1930s and early 40s. Thus the image here appears to show Italian Cubs in the late 1940s. It appears to have followed the British Cun uniform very closely. We note images from the 1950s with Italian Cubs wearing uniforms similar to the Bitiush Cub uniform. We also note Italian Cubs in 1989 wearing uniforms similr to the Italian Cub unifom. We o not, however, have any current information. Also we are unsure about differences among the different Italian Scout associations.

The 1910s

HBU does not know when Cubbing was initiated in Italy. Presumably it was after 1916 when cubbing began in England. Thus we are not positive when the first Italaian Cub uniforms were developed. We are also unsure how the Cub uniform developed over time.

The 1920s

We know that the Italian Fascists banned Scouting in the 1920s. This means there was no cubbing in the 1930s and early 40s.

The 1940s

Thus the image here appears to show Italian Cubs in the late 1940s. As Scouting was reintroduced to Italy after the War, a very Brish style uniform appears to hsve been adopted--at least for the Cubs (figure1). The Cubs look well kitted out. Thre are difference, however, with the kneesocks. The uniform looks to have followed the British Cub uniform very closely.

The 1950s

We note images from the 1950s with Italian Cubs wearing uniforms similar to the British Cub uniform. The uniform looks little chsnged from the 1940s. We do note that the Cubs appear to have a pin on cap badge. The cap itself is the traditional Briish peaked cap.

The 1960s

The 1970s

The 1980s

We also note Italian Cubs in 1989 wearing uniforms similar to the Italian Cub unifom. We are unsure about differences among the different Italian Scout associations.

2000s

We do not, however, have any current information.
