United Arab Emrirates Boy Scout Uniforms

Figure 1.--UAE Boy Scouts in the 1990s wear long pants wears that look much like English Scout uniforms.

United Arab Emriate Scouts rather like British Scouts wear teal colored long pants. Cubs wear very long short pants. Note the length of the shorts. Although in the modern longer style, it should be remembered that on religious grounds, Sharjah is strict over the wearing of shorts in public by men, and by women is a no-no. In the case of boys, a compromise is reached by allowing them to wear shorts but they must be of a longer length to just knee length.

UAE Scouting

HBU has virtually no information on UAE Scouting at this time. We lack even basic information such as when the movement was founded. We do note images of Scouts from what looks like the late 1950s. We would be interested in any information on UAE Scout history that readers may be able to provide.

Islamic Conventions

Conventions vary in the Arab world. Short pants for boys, even young boys, were never ver popular. Many Scouts did, however, at one time wear short pants. I'm not sure about UAE Scouts. Cubs today wear very long short pants. Note the length of the shorts. Although in the modern longer style, it should be remembered that on religious grounds, Sharjah is strict over the wearing of shorts in public by men, and by women is a no-no. Uniforms

UAE Scouts and Cubs wear destinctive uniforms. Cubs abd Scouts from the same unit, however, will wear identical kerchiefs. The modern uniform is different than that worn in the 1960s. We are not precisely sure when the change was made. Pne change is that headwear is now much less common which seems strange in a country where the sun is so strong. UAE Scouts in the 1990s wore uniforms that look much like English Scouts, despite the heat complete with teal long pants. Caps do not appear to be very popular, but the boys do wear proper uniforms, complete with kerchiefs. Cubs like the Scouts do not wear caps and they wear very similar shirts. The major difference is that the Cubs wear very long blue short pants with white ankle socks.
