Uniforms at Sixteenth World Boy Scout Jamboree: Australia

Figure 1.--.

Held at Cataract Park, a specially constructed Scout tent town situated on a 160 hectare site near Sydney, this was the first World Scout Jamboree to be held in the Southern Hemisphere. Under the theme 'Bringing the World Together', 16,000 Scouts from over 80 countries attended the Jamboree with around 13,000 more in attendance on 'visiting day'. The 850 strong UK contingent included 18 Ranger Guides (the first time members of the Guide Association have been allowed to take part in a World Scout Jamboree), Mrs Betty Clay, daughter of the Founder, and 11 members of the Baden-Powell family, 9 of whom are direct descendants of B.-P. The opening ceremony of the Jamboree, which took place at midnight on December 31, 1987, was the first official event of Australia's Bicentennial Celebrations.

National Uniforms

England

The British shift to a long pants uniform in 1969 rather complicated camping as the uniform was not particularly practical for outdoors activity. This was especially true for participation in World Jamborees when held in countries with particularly warm summers. An HBC contributor reports that during the late 1980s, "... a troop that I was a part of a few years earlier, went to one of these World Jambories and required that all boys would wear black shorts and white kneesocks but to keep the remaining other uniform parts. Only on one occation a year or so later, I saw the return of this uniform at a local village summer fair by another troop, yet this troop was still under the same area scout district. Not so long ago a saw the same uniform on one of those "Home video mishap shows" with a scout marching band."
