New Zealand students of all ages have prepared descriptions of their countries. Some of the descriptions are quite predictable. Others are a little surprising, even humerous. What children and teenagers see as important is often different from what adults believe to be important. Of course the teachers have provided guidance in preparing this material, but the responses are still fascinating. The various descriptions, however, provide a fascinating glimpse intp the minds of New Zealand school children and their schools.
Kia ora. Hi we are Room 1 at Richmond School, New Zealand. We have 32 people in our class. We have 16 boys and 16 girls in our class. They are standard 3's and 4's
(year 5,6,7) (age 9,10,11.) We have a cool teacher called Mr Martin. We live in Richmond, Nelson. We are found on the map, 173.2 degrees east latitude and 41.3 degrees South longitude. Richmond is a place at the top of the South Island. It has a population of around 8-10 thousand people. Richmond has two shopping malls and really awesome shops. We have a really massive super-market called Pac'n'save. We have a lot of native bush around us. Many people come to our area because of its beauty and the activities they can take part in. These include hunting, fishing, snorkling, tramping mountain biking and sky diving.
There are 3 islands altogether in New Zealand. The South Island, North Island and Stewart Island. We are one of the smallest countries in the world. At school we
enjoy playing sport like: longball, soccer, fordball, softball and swimming. Some of the sports we play on the weekends are: netball, hockey, miniball, rugby, soccer
and we are going to start indoor cricket. We also like eating pigs, deer and goats which Mr Martin hunts. We have got a computer with the internet and email. In maths lately we have been doing geometry. Now we are studying Colonial New Zealand. Last term we sketched our shoes and we also mounted the sketches. We do reading, maths and spelling for homework. We hope this gives you an insight into the lives of children in our class. Ka Kite Ano (See you later). Room 1 and Mr Martin
