The tend to come from affluent or at least families with comfortable circumstances. Most of these families recognize the importance of education and place considerable value on academic achievement. These families tend to insist that their children due the same. Children in state schools come from a wider cross section of society. The academic program of smaller class sizes and more individual attention are also important factors in the higher academic achievement in private schools. There are of course wide differences among schools. Auckland's Boys' Grammar for example is a state school, but consistently achieves impressive results. While private schools on average achieve the best results. Many individuals from the state schools also achieve impressive academic results. We are less sure how results campare at single gender and coed schools. Some parents favor single gender schools because they beliee thst their children will do better academically with out the destraction of the other gender. We are unsure, however, if academic results asctualy do benefit.

Boarding schools of course oversee a students entire day Thus all students are compeled to devote considerable time to his or her studies. One would assume that this is reflected in soperior academic achievement. Of course the boarding schools are almost all private schools so it is difficulkt to assesx whether it is private education or boarding that is the important factor.
