New Zealand Education: Boarding Schools--Popularity

Figure 1.-- This is a coeducational private boarding school for seconndary-level youths. The school is associated with the Anglican church.

Several schools have dropped boarding in recent years, but quite a number still do. There are quite a few different types of schools offering boarding in New Zealand. Here are some representative boarding schools showing the varying boarding arrangements.

Private Preparatory School

The school is for boys between five and fourteen years of age (J1-F2). Boarders attend from Standard 1. The experience is that three or four years at a preparatory school as a boarder give the best results, even when a student later attends their secondary school as a day pupil. We believe in the specialist programmes offered at Southwell and as a result, to gain full benefit, encourage students to attend from the age of five. It is the aim of the School to provide a home-like atmosphere for boarders. Their days are well-organised but ample time is allowed for them to pursue their own interests. Their cares and needs are catered for by a staff of Housemaster, Assistant Housemaster, Matron and four House Tutors. The routines of the boarding-house have been well-established and cater for boys' academic, social, physical and emotional growth and well-being. Boarders quickly develop a sense of independence, an awareness of community living and the need to care for others. Boarders are able to choose from a wide selection of activities which are provided during the year. Activities may include: Martial Arts, model making, chess, needlecraft, pottery, electronics, photography, drama, stained glass and other crafts. The school has a large and well-stocked library, and besides periods for each class during the week, it is open in the boys' spare time and during preparation. Boarders have garden plots which they enjoy and are active in various projects pertaining to the care and development of school grounds.

Private Boys Secondary School (recently becoming coed)

Over 300 students board full-time at Collegiate School. Seven boarding houses - Empson, Selwyn, Grey, Hadfield and Harvey for boys and Bishops and Godwin for girls - offer young people the experience of learning to get along together in a supportive environment. Students in boarding houses are in the care of a resident Housemaster, assisted by a resident Assistant Housemaster. The resident House Matron shares responsibility for boarders, supervising domestic arrangements and providing support for the students in her care. Year 9 students generally share living space with two others. Work stations are provided in another part of the house for personal tudy and supervised homework ('prep'). Prep is one of the major advantages of boarding life. It gives students a chance to develop self-discipline and good work habits which will stand them in good stead for the future. With growing maturity comes the need for privacy. Individual spaces for sleeping, study and relaxation are provided for the more senior students, who get the best of community living and personal space. Sleeping quarters are out of bounds to visitors from other houses so spacious common rooms are provided for students to mix socially. House residents have a meeting each evening - a chance to discuss the day's activities and cover housekeeping matters before finishing the day with a prayer. Wanganui Collegiate School's commitment to seven-day boarding offers students continuity, stability and a chance to participate fully in the wide range of cultural activities available at the school and in the local area. Day-to-day running of the House is in the hands of a team of senior students selected by the Housemaster. They are responsible to him/her for daily routines and other House activities. Firm discipline within the school community helps instil a sense of self-discipline, particularly for senior students who are encouraged to take responsibility within the house.

Catholic Boys Secondary School

Boarding is an intrinsic part of Sacred Heart College. Full and weekday boarding, provided by the Marist Brothers, lies at the heart of the College community. The positive, generous interest and commitment of the boarders to the College and to the Marist brothers, creates a unique spirit and atmosphere. The hostel, though autonomous, is integrated into the school. It has provision for 200 boarders, and provides a warm, Catholic environment, in harmony with the hopes and ideals of its parents. The Hostel is split between age groups, with years 12 & 13 in single or double rooms in Leonard House, the senior part of the Hostel. Year 11 students share cubicle areas in another part of the hostel, while year 9 & 10 students sleep in dormitories of eight per area. Study is an important part of the Hostel life, and formal study periods are timetabled, and supervision provided by the Hostel staff - including some Marist Brothers - to enable students to maximise the effectiveness of this time. Years 9 & 10 have a minimum study period of one and-a-half hours every school night. Years 11 & 12 have two and a half hours of formal study, every school night; while year 13 students also have two and-a-half hours of formal study. In the senior classes, the emphasis is put on personal study responsibility, but individual negligence is acted on.

Catholic Girls Secondary School

"Euphrasie House" offers boarding accommodation for 90 students, and is situated in Clyde Street, opposite the College, and is part of the St. Mary's Convent building. The College and Hostel are operated as separate autonomous units. Euphrasie House is administered by a Management Committee. The day-to-day managernent is the responsibility of the Hostel Administrator, while the students' supervision and welfare is the special responslbility of the Matron-in-Charge and a team of assisting Matrons. Euphrasie House aims to provide for the students a place of warmth and welcome, of care and respect for each girl as a valued member of its Catholic community. As in the College, our Special Character is protected and nurtured. Rules and procedures are developed and administered within the framework of Gospel values. Euphrasie House offers comfortable, single accommodation and extensive living and recreational facilities and is set amid attractive gardens and lawns. Excellent study facilities are available and regular study times closely supervised. Hostel students are traditionally well represented in all aspects of College life; academic, sporting and cultural. Boarding is offered to students from Year 9 to Year 12, weekly and fulltime. Year 13 students are offered accommodation in a separate Annexe within Euphrasie House. The Annexe contains comfortable, well-appointed single bedrooms, shared bathroom, kitchen and sitting room. The Year 13 students are encouraged to take individual responsibility and develop valuable skills for living independently while still within a secure and supportive environment. As well as providing educational and sporting opportunities to girls whose families live beyond Hamilton, Euphrasie House offers opportunities to develop qualities and skills of independence, responsibility and leadership; to experierience and contribute to the building of a special community.
