One of the destinctive features of New Zealand education is the emphasis placed on physical skills and sport.
Most New Zealand schools regard physical education programs andcgames an essential part of the training of character. These programs are often compulsory for all students in private schools, especially those traditional schools founded on the basis of English preparatory and public schools. Programs are more varied in state schools, but still generally of some importance. Coaching is provided by teachers on the staff. Consistent and skilful coaching gives a high standard of performance, and team games give the boys a chance to learn lessons of commitment and self-reliance.
The sports program is seasonal. Sport groups are often formed to assist children in the development of game skills. In summer the games are Cricket, Swimming, Tennis and Softball and in winter Hockey, Rugby Football and Soccer. Athletic Sports are held in the spring and Swimming, Cross Country, Gymnastic and Volley Ball Championships take place annually. Matches are played with comparable schools.
