Yesterday, the 30th of April Greymouth junior High school had a cross country it was approximately three kilometres. First of all we had a warm up session before we ran. Everyone had to be with their class. The Form two boys ran first then it was the Form two girls. I was amongst about fifty girls running the cross country. I ran until the race course without stopping then that slowed me down for the next kilometre. It was a really long run that seemed to go on forever and ever. Everyone seemed to be running with a group of two or three. A teacher was standing at nearly every turn considering that there was only five turns. I managed pass quite a few Form two boys. (Form two girls left fifteen minutes in between the the Form two boys and Form one boys.) Then again lots of Form one boys passed me. When I had reached Dixon park my legs felt like jelly but I still managed to make it to the school gates. You had to run through the girls chute which was the second pathway gate. There you got your time and placing, one girl told your time from a stop watch and another girl wrote on your hand with a blue marker pen your placing. From there you go to the row of desks. Each desk had a piece of paper saying what desk to report to. Then they record down your name, house colour, time and placing. Then you could get a small juicee. When everyone had arrived we could all get changed.

Yesterday, The Junior high school held their yearly cross country run. About 67 Form 2 boys boys ran, 56 Form 2 girls, 60 Form 1 boys and 50 Form 1 girls. The day started off with Mrs Speakman leading the whole school with a warm up. The Form 2 boys started at 9:15, Form 2 girls at 9:40, Form 1 boys at 9:55 and the Form 1 girls at 10:10. The starter, Mrs Speakman started the year groups off down at the Brewery For the course you had to go down to the Union (Hotel) ed. and turn and run up towards Victoria Park the keep running along the footpath until you turned onto the stop bank that went behind Fat Max's Gym. Then you had to follow the stop bank to the railway line, then run up to the road and cross, then run down the footpath until you get to the crossing opposite Dixon Park. You then ran through Dixon Park and up to the footpath and into the school yard via the chute labelled girls if you are a girl or boys if you are a boy. When the students came in the gates they got given a placing and then a time. When you had given your time and placing to the person at the table with your Rm number on the front envelope got given a small juicee for participating. When everyone had got changed it was time for interval.

The cross country was so tough for some people that are not fit, like us of course. That is why some people walked all the way which was very good. Some people that passed us were very good at running, some people were taking people's shirts.

The cross country was fun but for some people it was a killer. Me and my friends walked it. Layne Green won. At the start everyone began well, but after a while everyone got puffed.

ran it and walked it. At the start it was boring. It stayed boring because I got stuck in the mud up to my ankle. I got soaking wet because I tipped water over myself to keep me cool. I did it in 27 minutes and Layne won.

In the cross country what I and some of the others did was walk because we knew that the fittest of the fittest would get a great finish but the good thing about this is that we all get a drink. And the bad thing was that if you walked that a lot of people would pass you. It was funny that a boy Royce beat his older brother Layne by 5 seconds. The thing to do in the cross country is to be one of the first six people in your division to win.

WELL I'M GOING TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE CROSS COUNTRY ......... IT STARTED AT ABOUT 9.15 THIS MORNING. WE STARTED OUTSIDE OF THE MONTEITH'S BREWERY. THE TEACHERS SAID 'GO' SO WE ALL STARTED TO RUN. I WAS IN THE SECOND LINE OF BOYS. I GOT INTO THE TOP 6th, I THINK I WAS 5th, I STAYED IN THAT POSITION FOR ABOUT 3 QUARTERS OF THE RACE. THEN I GOT A MAJOR STITCH IT REALLY HURT SO I CAUGHT UP TO ONE OF MY FRIENDS WHO HAD ALSO HAD A BAD STITCH. I STAYED WITH HIM FOR ABOUT ONE MINUTE OR SO THEN I FELT GOOD ENOUGH BY THAT TIME, I WAS 12th. I RAN FOR A LITTLE WHILE LONGER AND I HAD MET UP ABOUT 100 METRES FROM THE SCHOOL WITH ONE OF MY FRIENDS WHO HAD CUT ACROSS THE BLAKETOWN SEWERAGE PIPE. THEN WE RAN TO THE FINISH LINE AND CAME 12th EQUAL THEN I WENT AND GOT A JUICEY.
