Well done to the team who went to Nationals. Results were everything
we could have hoped for, with an individual silver medal to Kirsty
Turnbull and team bronze medals for the girls’ road race team. The
highlights:
Kirsty’s 2:12.55 in her 800m final, when beaten by the 18-year-old
Elizabeth Auld, was not only a personal best, but a new school record -
and a wonderful run! Congratulations Kirsty!.
Third former Hayley Sherborne’s run in the open 1500m Steeplechase,
finishing 10th of 20 was a fine run for a youngster against runners up to
19 years old.
Euan McGhie finished 11th of 26 in the senior boys’ javelin with a throw
of 46.35m, going close to earning three more throws as one of the last
eight. Euan’s first competitive season of javelin throwing last year
showed he could be very competitive at national level this year.
Vanessa Mygind’s 63.31 in her 400m heat was a personal best for her
and qualified her 12th fastest for the semi’s. She backed up with a gutsy
64.50 in her semi only two hours after the road race.
Ramon Steenson ran his 1500 heat about three seconds outside his
personal best. Ramon, who would run each lap in about 72 seconds at this
pace, did well to rally after trying to hang on to a leading bunch which
went through their first lap in a crazy 59 seconds.
The result which surprised us, was that of the junior girls’ 4x400m relay
team. We assumed we were in the B Final as we watched Vanessa
Mygind run 62.6 for the last leg and all but catch Otumoetai as she
dipped on the line. It was so close we thought she was 3rd, but judges
gave her 4th. Only later did we find the girls had run in the A final and
had come close to winning a medal. Hayley Sherborne (68.3), Charlotte
Tremewan (68.7), Emma Joll (70.4) and Vanessa, were in the team
Well done to the girls’ road team on their bronze medal run. The team was entered in the
senior girls’ race but was a composite team made up of two seniors and four juniors, with
third former Hayley Sherborne the first of them home in 16m 15s, in 28th place (a time worth
18th in the junior race). She was followed by Holly Turnbull (16:41), Charlotte Tremewan
(16:49), Shelley Bicknell (17.09), Vanessa Mygind (17:56) and Jessica Wolken (18:11).
Winners, Tauranga Girls’ College, and runners up, St Cuthberts, were the two
best-performed schools at the national cross country last year and 4th placed Whakatane
also won medals there. To come close to St Cuthberts and beat Whakatane, was a very
pleasing result.
In the junior boys’ road race Hamish McLachlan’s 8th (in 13m 31s) was a great run, chasing home other Hawke’s Bay runners Callum Millward (4th), Owen Evans (6th) and Shannon
Dally (7th). Well done! Ramon Steenson finished 29th in 14:13 and must have been one of
the first third formers home. Both were fine runs.
So, a very pleasing set of results from an excellent group of athletes to be away with.
David Ellengold won three medals in these North Island Under-14 games: two individual
bronzes in the 100m and 200m and a gold as part of the Hastings medley relay team.
Vanessa Mygind (14) ran a personal best of 62:41 for 400m and Kirsty Turnbull (16)
finished fourth in the 800m, both running in the Under-18 grade. They teamed up with Lisa
Blakey (Iona) and Danielle O’Connor (Sacred Heart) as the Hastings team to finish 4th in
the 4x400 relay. Hayley Sherborne (14) ran a personal best 8:16 in the open women’s
Steeplechase over 2k and was the second under-18 runner home.
After spending the day at the swimming sports, our juniors took part in ten events against the other local schools, all run as relays, collecting two firsts, four seconds and two thirds. The wins came in the Girls’ Long Jump and Boys’ 4x400m.
